THE STORY BEHIND

SHOWER OF POWER

In the vast wilderness of South Africa, amidst the rustling grass and the distant calls of the wild, stands a symbol of majesty and power - the elephant. This gentle giant, with its wise eyes and grandeur, possesses rituals that have captivated hearts and sparked curiosity. One such ritual is their unique "sand shower." Elephants are known to spray sand and dust onto themselves, a practice that serves both as a sunscreen, protecting their skin from the harsh sun, and as a pest deterrent, warding off irritating insects.

It was on January 7, 2019, a day etched in my memory, that I found myself on the brink of capturing this mesmerizing act. From the confines of our safari jeep, I watched, breathless, as an elephant, having already performed this act at a distance, ambled closer. Hope and anticipation danced in my heart. Would this majestic creature grace me with another performance?

And then, as if the universe conspired in my favor, just a few meters from our vehicle, it happened. The elephant paused, locking its gaze with mine, and in an act of raw, unfiltered power, began its sand ritual. My camera, set at 7 frames per second, became an extension of my soul, capturing every granule, every movement, every emotion.

Over 100 photos later, as I reviewed the images, three stood out - the culmination of dreams, patience, and serendipity. The moment I had long chased was finally immortalized. This is the essence of the wild, the dance of nature, and the shower of power.
